In the U.S., Bombus penyslvanicus is a more warm adapted lowland bee that prefers to nest near the ground surface in old grasses. It occurs throughout the eastern U.S., with a western distribution in the foothills and shortgrass prairies just east of the Rockies. In the Midwest, its northern limit is in the southern parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. If it occurs in North Dakota, it is likely in the far southern counties. This species also extends into north and central Mexico, where it overlaps and potentially hybridizes with its sister taxon, Bombus sonorus. |
